Dallas County recently decided to offer aerial mosquito spraying services for Dallas area communities. The decision was made in response to the threat of record numbers of West Nile virus (WNV) cases in the north Texas area. As with any important decision, there are differing opinions on what should be done to battle this latest mosquito crisis.

West Nile virus has been detected for the first time in 2009 in Texas, said an expert with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service.
The virus was found June 9 in mosquitoes by Harris County’s mosquito control department, said Dr. Mark Johnsen, AgriLife Extension medical entomologist based in College Station.

Cooler weather entices thousands of Texans outdoors to enjoy hunting, hiking, camping and other activities.
“But billions of critters that can carry disease-causing germs will be out there as well,” said Guy Moore, a wildlife biologist with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). “Outdoor activities bring a greater risk of exposure to diseases transmitted by fleas, ticks and mosquitoes and other animals.”

DSHS has confirmed 33 human cases of neuroinvasive West Nile in Texas residents this year. Counties with cases are: Brazos (4), Dallas (3), Denton, El Paso (17), Frio, Harris, Jefferson, Smith, Tarrant (3) and Travis.
