DSHS Encourages H1N1 Shots as Virus Continues to Circulate

“The virus is still circulating. It’s still hospitalizing people. We’re seeing some increases in H1N1 activity in other parts of the country, and our illness patterns in Texas have generally followed what happens in the southeast,” said Dr. David Lakey, DSHS commissioner. “There is plenty of vaccine to go around. People who have not been vaccinated should do so now.”

The Texas Hurricane Conference and the Texas Homeland Security Converence will be combined this year and held in San Antonio, March 23-26. This year’s conference, sponsored by the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management, presents a wide variety of workshops, presentations, and training opportunities involving homeland security, hurricane preparedness, and the role of voluntary agencies in emergency management. The conference is one of the premier training events for the emergency management and homeland security professionals in the United States.

Participants include first responders, law enforcement, federal, state, and local officials, private sector representatives, voluntary agencies, and emergency managemnet experts engaged in the full spectrum of preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of all hazards and all threats to Texas.

Gov. Perry Authorizes State Assets to Fight Wildfires in Central Texas

Gov. Rick Perry has activated state resources to combat wildfires in Central Texas. These resources include four Texas Military Forces Blackhawk helicopters equipped to drop water and fire retardant, Texas Forest Service fire fighters and contract aircraft and heavy equipment. A cold front sweeping through the state late Friday and Saturday increased the wildfire threat with high winds and low humidity.
