Be Aware of Fraud After a Disaster

Consumer Alert: TDI has received reports that people claiming to be from insurance companies are showing up at consumers’ houses unsolicited. Be wary of anyone who comes to your house before you’ve filed a claim. If you’re unsure, call your insurance company to ask if they’ve sent someone to your home.

Disaster Assistance Available to Producers Affected by Wildfires

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist Salvador Salinas announced today that $4 million in disaster assistance is available to help with recovery after the 2011 historic drought and wildfire conditions across much of the state. Funds are being made available through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), which provides both financial and technical assistance to install measures that reduce post-fire damage and aid in the rehabilitation process.

Although EQIP sign-up is continuous, applications for this first funding period will be accepted in the County NRCS offices through April 13, 2012.

WHY: Texas is vulnerable to disasters. Being prepared is a necessity. The new video series provides community leaders a tool they can use to raise awareness about disasters locally and increase preparedness levels in their communities.

ABOUT THE SERIES: Surviving Disaster: How Texans Prepare is a series of six short documentary videos. Each one features a Texas community that has experienced a disaster. Survivors tell their stories of survival from wildfires, flash floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Experts offer guidance on how to plan for disasters.

The videos are packaged with a screening guide and other tools designed to help leaders screen the videos and promote preparedness locally.

The series was produced by DSHS in partnership with the Texas Division of Emergency Management. It is part of the state’s Ready or Not? emergency education campaign.

The videos are available for viewing, downloading and sharing at www.TexasPrepares.org/SurvivingDisaster.htm. DVDs can be ordered from the same website. All videos are available in English and Spanish.


Common Misunderstandings Can Harm Disaster Survivors
